Wayne Shorter, who is credited with helping to create jazz-rock or fusion, jazz saxophonist and composer passed away in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 89, on 2nd March 2023. His publicist informed the New York Times of his passing. Shorter is survived by his daughter Miyako and third wife Carolina Dos Santos.
Shorter, like John Coltrane before him, played a significant role in popularising the soprano saxophone as a musical instrument that is equally adept at producing strange, otherworldly sounds as it is at carrying a melody.
He gained notoriety as a key figure in the development of post-bop jazz in the 1960s with a series of solo albums for Blue Note and Columbia Records after honing his tenor playing in the hard bop environment of the late 1950s.
