Are Madonna and Cyndi Lauper friends?

With their respective debuts in the early 1980s, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper helped usher in a new age of strong, independent female pop singers. But, despite having parallel careers, Lauper claims the two never grew close.

In a recent interview with Shelli Sonstein of Q104.3 New York, Lauper was questioned about being compared to Madonna at the beginning of her career.

“She has various skills in my opinion from mine.
I believe that everyone is unique “Before concurring with Sonstein’s claim that female and male musicians receive distinct treatment in the music industry, Lauper added.

Sadly, they “pit women against women,” Lauper continued.
“At the time, I felt awful.”

Lauper claims that despite Madonna’s success in other fields, her primary focus has always been on singing and looking after her physical and mental health.

Before discussing her current struggles with psoriasis and other health issues, she said, “I just want to be able to do things that I enjoy and be well enough to accomplish them.”

Later in the same interview — which you can watch above — Lauper fought back against the assumption that the #MeToo movement has yet to arrive in the music industry.
She used Taylor Swift’s groping lawsuit victory and Kesha’s accusations against producer Dr. Luke as examples.

Things do happen, stated Lauper.
“You just pray that the other women coming up behind us won’t have to experience it the following time.
I never thought otherwise.
I never considered things to be in order.
My career did not progress [better] because of this”.

She proceeded by saying that, regardless of how it harmed her record sales, she had long stood up to miscreants in her field.

“I spoke up at every single thing that I thought was wrong. Whether it was as an artist or as a woman, I said something.
