Judge Judy is a reality court programme based on arbitration that is hosted by Judith Sheindlin, a former judge for the Manhattan Family Court.
Sheindlin presided over actual small-claims cases in a mock courtroom setting for the show.

The parties to the dispute signed arbitration agreements agreeing to Sheindlin’s decision in advance of the hearings. The programme was shown in first-run syndication. It is still shown in syndication by CBS Media Ventures, much as it was during its active years of production, but now in repeats that continue to receive remarkably high ratings.
When she was taken to the hospital during the taping of her programme, Judge Judy acknowledged that she may have experienced a mini-stroke.
The 68-year-old said that she could have had a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), which led her to “start asking questions in slow motion.”
Judith Sheindlin, better known as Judge Judy, was detained overnight in a hospital for observation after horrified producers immediately dialled 911.
