Is Chief Keef independent?

Chief Keef is the stage name of rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer Keith Farrelle Cozart (born August 15, 1995).

Early 2010s high school students from Chicago’s South Side were the first to take an interest in his music when he was still a kid. The American rapper Kanye West remixed Cozart’s well-known local single “I Don’t Like” in 2012, and the song went on to chart in the Billboard Rap Top 20.

Keef signed with Interscope following a negotiation between big labels. His first album Finally Rich, which was released in December 2012, had the hits “I Don’t Like” and “Love Sosa,” which helped to make the Chicago rap subgenre drill mainstream.

Chief mentioned in an interview that he has been independent for about 10 years.

Keef’s song “I Don’t Like” became a hit in Chicago. A local party promoter called it “the perfect Chicago song because ‘niggas just hate everything out here'”. When Kanye West heard it, he decided to remix the song with Pusha T, Jadakiss, and Big Sean.  Keef “sudden soared up out of obscurity” as a result.

Chief Keef was the target of a bidding war between record companies in the summer of 2012, including Young Jeezy’s CTE World. Chief Keef joined Interscope Records at the start of 2012, yet it turned out to be a very quiet year for his musical production.
