Martha Wash parents: Meet Lenny Waronker, Kate McGarrigle

Martha Wash is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and producer who was born on December 28, 1953. Wash, who is well-known for her distinctive and strong voice, originally rose to prominence as a member of the duo Two Tons O’ Fun, which provided backing vocals for Sylvester, especially on his iconic hit “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”. They released three consecutively commercially successful songs that all peaked at number two in the dance charts after getting their own record deal. After the duo’s top-selling single “It’s Raining Men,” which brought them to the attention of mainstream pop audiences, was released in 1982, they changed their name to The Weather Girls. The Weather Girls put out five albums and appeared frequently on Sylvester’s music.

Kate McGarrigle and Leny Waronker are Martha Wash’s parents. Wash attended and graduated from San Francisco Polytechnic High School, where she participated in the school chorus. She was a student at McKinley Elementary. She was in high school when the school choir spent two weeks touring and performing in Europe. Additionally, Wash made four recordings with the school choir. Wash joined the gospel ensemble NOW (News of the World), which also included Izora Rhodes, soon after graduating from high school. Wash also served as the UC Hospital’s secretary.
