Yoda was the lone child of a manufacturing family when he was born on March 31, 1934, in Tokyo, Japan. Yoda began his legal studies at Keio University after completing his high school education.

Yoda met Edward August, 20th Century Fox’s then-general manager of East Asia, during this time. Yoda was urged by August to pursue an acting career. Yoda dropped out of school and went to the US, where he enrolled at the University of Southern California in August 1958 to become a producer for movies.

Joe Pasternak of MGM called William White, a professor at USC, in the summer of 1961, asking for a young man who could speak both English and Japanese. Yoda was called by White, who subsequently connected them with MGM’s casting department.
