Mississippi John Hurt parents: Meet Isom Hurt, Mary Jane McCain

John Hurt had a great time growing up beside his parents, as they supported his dream of being a musician. He was born on March 8, 1892, in Teoc, Mississippi, United States to Isom Hurt and Mary Jane McCain.

Though not much is known about John Hurt’s family, they had always had his back in terms of his career.

Hurt’s influence spanned several music genres, including blues, spirituals, country, bluegrass, folk, and contemporary rock and roll. A soft-spoken man, his nature was reflected in the work, which consisted of a mellow mix of country, blues, and old-time music.

Hurt died on November 2, 1966, of a heart attack, in a hospital in Grenada, Mississippi. His last recordings had been done at a hotel in New York City in February and July of that year and were not released until 1972 on the Vanguard LP Last Sessions.
