When a civilian Beechcraft Debonair plane crashed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, on March 31, 1967, Jordan’s father, Allen Bernard Jordan, a major in the United States Army Reserve, perished along with two other people. Jordan was just about 12 years old at the time.
Jordan acknowledged in a 2014 interview that he had a challenging upbringing as a Southern Baptist. “I underwent 14 baptisms. The pastor would repeatedly yell, “Come forward, sinners!” I would mention how I had been in the woods with that boy. I had better go on.”
