W. Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose Jr. on February 6, 1962) is a musician from the United States. He is best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, of which he has been a member since the band’s founding in 1985. Rose has been rated one of the best vocalists of all time by several media sites, including Rolling Stone and NME, due to her distinctive and strong wide-ranging voice.

Rose was born and reared in Lafayette, Indiana, and relocated to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, where he became involved in the local hard rock scene and joined many bands, including Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns.

He co-founded Guns N’ Roses in 1985, with whom he achieved considerable popularity and recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Appetite for Destruction (1987), their debut album, has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling debut album of all time in the United States, with 18 million units sold.

Its full-length follow-ups, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II (1991), were also hugely successful; they debuted at No. 2 and No. 1 on the Billboard 200, respectively, and have sold a total of 35 million copies worldwide.

Rose retreated from public life for several years after the conclusion of their two-and-a-half-year Use Your Illusion Tour in 1994, while the band disbanded due to personal and musical disputes. He was able to continue operating under the Guns N’ Roses banner as the band’s lone remaining original member since he had legally obtained the band name.

He emerged with a new Guns N’ Roses lineup at Rock in Rio 3 in 2001, and then played periodic concert tours to promote the long-awaited Chinese Democracy (2008), which undersold the music industry’s commercial expectations despite favorable reviews upon its release.

Rose was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N’ Roses in 2012, but he refused to attend and requested expulsion from the Hall. Rose partially reformed Guns N’ Roses’ “classic” lineup in 2016, the same year he performed with AC/DC, and has since toured the world as part of the Not in This Lifetime… Tour.
