On May 16, 1993, in Songjeong-dong, Seoul, South Korea, IU was born Lee Ji-eun. IU expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry at a young age and began taking acting classes.
Her family’s financial situation deteriorated after her elementary school years, and they eventually relocated to nearby Uijeongbu, in Gyeonggi Province. For over a year, she and her younger brother lived apart from their parents in a studio room with their grandmother and cousin in abject poverty. IU had little contact with her parents during this time, but felt safe in the care of her grandmother.
IU discovered her passion for singing during her middle school years and decided to pursue a career as a singer after being applauded for a performance she gave at her school’s sports competition. She went to 20 auditions but didn’t get any of them, and she was also duped by bogus entertainment companies. She later studied with Uee, Yubin, Heo Ga-yoon, and Jun Hyo-seong at Good Entertainment.
She relocated to Bangbae, Seoul, after signing with LOEN Entertainment in 2007. IU stated that she “loved being at the studio” because she could eat as much as she wanted and had a place to sleep at the time due to her poor living conditions.
What label is IU under?
