American singer-songwriter, poet, painter, and author Patricia Lee Smith made a big impression on the New York City punk rock scene with her 1975 first album Horses. The date of birth of Patricia Lee Smith is December 30, 1946.

Smith, dubbed the “punk poet laureate,” incorporated music and poetry into her works. Her most well-known song is “Because the Night,” which she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen.

It reached its peak in 1978 at spot 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spot 5 in the UK. Smith received the title of Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in 2005. In 2007, she received her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Patti Smith is still in New York. On November 17, 2010, Smith’s novel Just Kids was awarded the National Book Award.

She had vowed to Robert Mapplethorpe, a former close friend, that the book would fulfill that promise.

The 100 Greatest Artists list compiled by Rolling Stone magazine in December 2010 placed her at number 47 overall and earned her the 2011 Polar Music Prize.
