Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California, and raised in El Cerrito, California, as the third of five boys to Galen Robert and Edith Lucile Fogerty. His father was born in Iowa and worked as a Linotype operator for the Berkeley Gazette in California.
Lucile Fogerty was a second-grade teacher from Great Falls, Montana. John first attended the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley, California. In his memoir, Fortunate Son, Fogerty was critical of the school, claiming that he was not allowed to use the restroom when he asked and that he frequently wet himself and was forced to sit in his wet clothing.
Fogerty enrolled in nearby Harding Grammar School after a year. He stated in his book that his parents were alcoholics who divorced when he was in the third or fourth grade. Later, he attended St. Mary’s High School before transferring to El Cerrito High School, where he met other future CCR members and took guitar lessons from Berkeley Folk Festival creator/producer Barry Olivier.
Tom Fogerty, Fogerty’s older brother, was a guitarist and bandmate in the group that became CCR. Fogerty spent summer vacations at Putah Creek, near Winters, California, which became the subject of the CCR song “Green River”.
