Clyde is said to have died at the age of 39. He was barely 5 months away from turning 40 years. The evangelical music McPhatter sang for a large portion of his early life had a profound influence on his high-pitched tenor voice. He founded the gospel group the Mount Lebanon Singers as a young man and served as its lead tenor.

McPhatter’s legacy includes more than 22 years of recorded history. Initially, as a solo performer and subsequently as a member of the Drifters, he was the first artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. The “Clyde McPhatter Club” is made up of subsequent double and triple inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
