Toots Hibbert (8 December 1942 – 11 September 2020), a Jamaican musician and songwriter also known by his stage name Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert, OJ, was the lead vocalist for the reggae and ska band Toots and the Maytals.
He was a reggae pioneer who performed for six decades and helped lay the groundwork for some of the genre’s fundamental concepts.
The song “Do the Reggay” by Hibbert from 1968 is frequently cited as the source of the word “reggae.” His band’s True Love CD won a Grammy Award in 2005.
Multi-instrumentalist Hibbert established Toots and the Maytals in 1961. Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, and James Brown were among the musicians he could play all the instruments in his band, and he later cited them as his principal musical influences.
According to Hibbert, the term “maytals” is a Rastafari expression for “do the right thing.” There are allegations that the name came from May Pen, Hibbert’s hometown.
The band’s original lineup included Jackie Jackson and Paul Douglas in addition to Gordon and Mathias.
