John Michael McDonagh born on 7 November 1967 is an Irish and British screenwriter and director.

He wrote and directed The Guard and Calvary both starring Brendan Gleeson, for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination. He was born in 1967 in London. He is the older brother of Martin McDonagh, a playwright, and director.

He grew up in England alongside his younger brother, playwright and director Martin McDonagh, but spent his summers in his mother’s Irish birthplace of Easky, County Sligo, which served as the backdrop for Calvary.

McDonagh, like his brother, dropped out of high school and became unemployed. He pursued a writing career and, after authoring numerous unpublished novels, decided to try his hand at screenwriting.
