Joan Didion was an American writer who rose to popularity in the 1960s after winning an essay contest sponsored by Vogue magazine.

Her work from the 1960s through the late 1970s steeped audiences in the reality of the 1960s counterculture and the Hollywood lifestyle.

Her political works were typically concerned with the rhetorical foundations of political and social discourse.

In 1991, she published the first national media piece stating that the Central Park Five were wrongfully convicted.

She received the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2005 for The Year of Magical Thinking and was a nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography/Autobiography.

She later adapted the novel into a Broadway play, which premiered in 2007. Didion appeared in the 2017 Netflix documentary The Center Will Not Hold, directed by her nephew Griffin Dunne.

Didion died at the age of 87 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
