Miriam Makeba who lived from March 4, 1932, to November 9, 2008, was a South African singer, songwriter, actor, and civil rights activist.

She was a vocal opponent of apartheid and white minority rule in South Africa and was associated with musical genres such as Afropop, jazz, and world music.

Bongi Makeba was the only daughter of the famous singer. She sadly passed away at the age of 34 through childbirth.

Miriam Makeba began her professional singing career in 1950 with the Cuban Brothers, an all-male close harmony group. She joined the Skylarks, a new all-woman group that sang a mix of jazz and traditional South African music, in 1954.

Makeba’s first solo breakthrough was Lovely Lies, which became the first South African record to chart on the Billboard Top 100 in 1956.

She played the lead female role in the Broadway-inspired South African jazz opera King Kong in 1959. The musical was staged in front of racially diverse audiences, which raised her profile among white South Africans. She made a brief appearance in the anti-apartheid film Come Back, Africa in 1959.
