Sade Adu (born Helen Folasade Adu CBE on January 16, 1959) is a Nigerian-born British musician best known as the main singer of her eponymous band.

After completing a three-year course in fashion design and briefly modeling thereafter, Sade was hired as the backing singer for the British band Pride.

At this point, she began writing songs with guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman of Pride, and the two of them began playing their own sets at Pride concerts with the assistance of the band’s rhythm section.

In 1983, Sade and Matthewman split from Pride to form the band Sade with pianist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and drummer Paul Cook when record labels expressed interest in her solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator.”
