What is Ella Fitzgerald most famous for?

She was famous for her tone purity, the flawless way she pronounced her words, phrasing, timing, intonation, and impeccable improvising skills.

Fitzgerald made her singing debut on November 21, 1934, at the age of 17, in one of the Apollo Theater’s early Amateur Nights.

She won a week of performing with Tiny Bradshaw’s band at the Harlem Opera House in 1935. Benny Carter introduced her to drummer and bandleader Chick Webb. Despite his “reluctance to sign her,” Webb offered her the chance to perform with his band at a Yale University dance.

From then on, the doors of opportunity opened up for her to showcase her rare talent to the world.
