The American actress Maria Luisa “Movita” Castaneda, who lived from April 12, 1916, until February 12, 2015, is best known for being Marlon Brando’s second wife. She portrayed exotic singers and women in movies like Flying Down to Rio (1933) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). She was the mother of Rebecca Brando Kotlizky and Miko Castaneda Brando (both born in 1961). (b. 1966).
On a train that ran between Mexico and Arizona, Movita, an American with Mexican ancestry, gave birth in Nogales, Arizona. In the first movie the renowned couple appeared in together, Flying Down to Rio, Movita made her acting debut by singing the Carioca to their first dance sequence (1933). In the 1930s, she continued to portray exotic ladies in American and Spanish-language movies, best known for her role as Tehanni, a Tahitian girl, in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), costarring Clark Gable and Franchot Tone.
In Paradise Isle (1937) and Girl from Rio (1939), both starring Warren Hull, she portrayed an island girl. She co-starred with Wilfrid Lawson and Michael Rennie in the 1941 British thriller Tower of Terror. After a gap, she starred alongside Tim Holt in two more westerns, The Mysterious Desperado (1949) and Saddle Legion, before making an appearance as Henry Fonda’s cook in Fort Apache (1948). (1951).
Movita wed Irish boxer, singer, and performer Jack Doyle in Mexico in 1939. The union did not last. She met actor Marlon Brando in the late 1950s, shortly after his separation from Anna Kashfi, after making appearances in a few more small western films and television roles. They got hitched in 1960 and had two kids. In the 1962 remake of the 1935 movie, in which Movita had played a Tahitian girl named Tehanni, Brando took on the character of Fletcher Christian.
Then, in 1962, Brando wed Tarita Teriipaia, a co-star. When it was determined that Castaneda’s former union with Doyle was still going strong, her 1968 marriage to Brando was declared null and void. Movita had a minor television appearance in 1977, but from October 1987 to May 1989, she played Ana in 17 episodes of Knots Landing.
