An accident while surfing killed veteran surfer Márcio Freire on Thursday in Portugal. He was 47.
The Portuguese Surfing Federation announced Freire’s passing in a statement. The federation stated, translated into English: “The Portuguese Surfing Federation regrets the tragic death, in Nazaré, of Brazilian surfer Márcio Freire. To the bereaved family and the big wave surfing community, our condolences.”
Local authorities for the beach where Freire died offered more information in a communiqué. An English translation of the local maritime control’s notification read, “A superb surfer of Brazilian nationality passed away today.”
Freire’s body was delivered to the Legal Medicine Institute in Leiria, according to SurferToday.

“The Municipality of Nazaré presents its deepest condolences to the entire bereaved family as well as to the entire surfing community and leaves a public thank you to everyone who did everything to avoid this outcome.”
Since he was a small child, Freire has loved surfing, and he eventually rose to fame in the surfing world. He was one of three surfers that appeared in the 2016 film “Mad Dogs.”
