Damar Romeyelle Hamlin, a safety with the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills, was born on March 24, 1998. (NFL).
He attended Pittsburgh during his college football career, and the Bills selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In 2022, after making a tackle, Hamlin lost consciousness and suffered a heart arrest. He received CPR before being taken to the hospital in a hurry.
On January 2, 2023, Hamlin fell after tackling wide receiver Tee Higgins during a Week 17 NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. Higgins struck Hamlin in the chest with his right shoulder. Hamlin then dragged Higgins down by wrapping his arms around his shoulders and helmet. The tackle was regarded as “quite ordinary” by sources, despite the jarring aspect of the hit. Following the play, Hamlin briefly stood up before collapsing on his back. Within 10 seconds, team trainers and paramedics raced to his side as he remained still. For 10 minutes, first responders performed CPR and defibrillation on Hamlin on the field.
Four minutes after his collapse, an ambulance arrived on the scene. Eventually, Hamlin was given oxygen and an intravenous solution (IV). Hamlin was then placed on a stretcher as the majority of both teams’ players came off the sidelines to kneel or stand around him. He was reported to be in serious condition and was intubated after being brought by ambulance and escorted by his mother to the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center at approximately 9:25 p.m. EST. The game was suspended with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and was rescheduled soon after 10 p.m., roughly one hour after Hamlin collapsed, in compliance with the NFL’s emergency-situation rules.
