Monson, a Seattle resident of Icelandic ancestry, was brought up in the predominantly Scandinavian neighborhood of Ballard. He completed high school at Ballard. He worked as the play-by-play announcer for Husky football on campus broadcaster KCMU while a student at the University of Washington.
Monson started his professional broadcasting career as a sports producer at KING-TV and a sports reporter and host at KING AM after longtime Seattle broadcaster Bill O’Mara introduced him to King Broadcasting owner Dorothy Bullitt. He later moved to KIRO-FM 100.7 when the Pat Cashman Show changed stations in 1994.
