Edinho is the son of Pelé, a Brazilian-Argentinean football legend, and his first wife, Rosemeri Cholbi Nascimento. Joshua, the second son of Pelé and Edson’s brother, was also a football player. He was also a forward for Santos’ youth setup.
He was detained in 2005 on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. He was given permission to remain free while he appealed the sentence.
He was convicted of the crimes in 2014 and sentenced to 33 years in prison, but he insists that he was not involved. The judge reduced Edinho’s sentence to 12 years and 10 months, but he must serve it in prison.
Edinho began serving his sentence in prison in 2017 but was given a semi-open prison term the following year. He was placed under the open regime in September 2019.
