Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in the United States. Sondheim, the son of Etta Janet and Herbert Sondheim, was born into a Jewish household in New York City.

His paternal grandparents were German Jews named Isaac and Rosa, while his maternal grandparents were Vilnius-based Lithuanian Jews named Joseph and Bessie. In Williamstown, Massachusetts, Sondheim enrolled at Williams College, a liberal arts college with a thriving theatre program.

Sondheim, one of the most significant figures in 20th-century musical theatre, is credited with “reinventing the American musical” with his productions that deal with “unexpected themes that range far beyond the traditional subjects” and have “music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication.”

His performances generally centre on “darker, more melancholy portions of the human experience,” and his compositions frequently have an “ambivalent” quality addressing many facets of existence. On the Broadway stage, he was well-recognized for his frequent collaborations with Hal Prince and James Lapine.
