Kathryn Marie Hahn was born in Westchester, Illinois, the daughter of Karen and Bill Hahn. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and was raised Catholic, attending St. Ann’s Catholic School and Beaumont School. Hahn earned a BA in theater from Northwestern University. Following that, she received her MFA in drama from Yale University.

Hickory Hideout, a local puppet show for children for then-NBC-owned and operated station WKYC in Cleveland, was Hahn’s first television appearance. (At the time of its cancellation, Hickory Hideout was airing on all of NBC’s O&O stations.) She met creator/producer Tim Kring at a festival. Hahn so impressed Kring that he created the character of Lily Lebowski in Crossing Jordan specifically for her. The show aired from 2001 to 2007. When asked about meeting Kring, Hahn stated, “NBC and Tim Kring took a huge risk by casting me. Working into a show that was already in production and on the schedule is an incredible stroke of luck.” Hahn signed a talent holding deal with Fox on October 21, 2008, according to TV Guide.
