Actor Gabriel Mokake has a motivational tale to share both on and off the stage, having fought for the right to remain in the UK and appearing in one of the biggest West End productions. He talks to Emma Knights, a correspondent for the arts.
The innovative musical Hamilton, which tells the narrative of one of America’s founding fathers through a mashup of hip-hop and musical theater, is currently one of the most sought-after tickets in London’s West End. It has won numerous Olivier Awards and received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Gabriel Mokake, a cast member who initially polished his acting skills as a kid here in Norfolk, is one of the actors contributing to the success of the show.
And just as the show tells the incredible story of how Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies, defied the odds to become one of America’s founding fathers and George Washington’s right-hand man, so too does Gabriel have his own inspiring tale to tell of achievement in the face of adversity.
As he takes to the Victoria Palace Theatre stage for each performance, he is keenly aware of some parallels between his own story and that of the show’s title character.
