Keegan-Michael Key was nurtured in Detroit after being born in Southfield, Michigan.

His white mother and black father adopted him as a child.
He founded the Planet Ant Theatre with Ryan Carlson, Margaret Exner, Joshua Funk, Nancy Hayden, and Mikey Brown in Hamtramck, Michigan.

In a cover story and lengthy piece with that subject in the March 31, 2013 issue of The New York Magazine, he and collaborator Jordan Peele were both prominently featured in a series of comic-photo examples of fictitious employees displaying “The Saintly Way to Succeed.”

He received his high school certificate from Royal Oak, Michigan’s Shrine Catholic High School in 1989. Key graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama in 1993, and then went on to Pennsylvania State University for a Master of Fine Arts in theatrical in 1996.
