Lawrence, 47, came from a performing arts household. His mother Cheryl is a vocalist and the choir director for Grace Lutheran Church’s Sounds of Grace.
Father Phil Sr. was a well-known disc jockey who hosted talent shows in his community, most notably the Black History Month Talent Show at the Old National Events Plaza, formerly the Vanderburgh Auditorium.
The Browne Sisters are an R&B and blues group made up of his second cousins Gina Moore and Joan Moore-Mobley. Gospel and inspirational musicians Shane and DeVonna are siblings.
At age 6, he performed at one of his father’s talent shows in the early 1980s and experienced his first taste of success.
