Heywood “Woody” Allen is a multi-award-winning film director, writer, actor, and comedian from the United States. Allen was born Allan Stewart Konigsberg on November 30, 1935.

He started out as a television writer in the 1950s, mostly for Your Show of Shows (1950–1954), when he collaborated with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart, and Neil Simon. In addition, he authored a number of books with short tales and contributed humorous essays to The New Yorker.

He shared the stage in Greenwich Village with Lenny Bruce, Elaine May, Mike Nichols, and Joan Rivers during the beginning of the 1960s. Instead of using conventional jokes, he created a monologue style there, adopting the persona of an educated, anxious, nervous nebbish. In the middle to end of the 1960s, he put out three comedic albums. His 1964 comedy album, simply titled Woody Allen, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album. On a list of the top 100 stand-up comedians published by Comedy Central in 2004, Allen was voted number four, while a UK survey placed him at number three.
