American actress Catherine Ann Keener was born on March 26, 1959. She has played sympathetic, resentful, and melancholy women in supporting roles in both independent and mainstream movies.
She received two nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress: once for Being John Malkovich (1999) and once for Capote, in which she played novelist Harper Lee (2005).
Keener has also appeared in the live-action films The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Into the Wild (2007), Synecdoche, New York (2008), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010), and Get Out (2017), as well as a starring voice role in Incredibles 2. (2018). Keener is director Nicole Holofcener’s muse, having appeared in all five of her films. She also appears in each of Tom DiCillo’s first four films, as well as three Spike Jonze films. From 2018 to 2020, she starred in the Showtime dramedy series Kidding.

Keener was the third of five children born in Miami, Florida to Evelyn and Jim Keener, the manager of a mattress store in Hialeah, Florida.
She is of Irish origin on her father’s side, and of Lebanese descent on her mother’s. Keener was reared as a Catholic in Hialeah and attended Catholic schools. She attended Monsignor Edward Pace High School.
