On October 15, 1968, Didier Claude Deschamps, a French professional football manager and former player, was born. Since 2012, he has served as the France national team’s manager.

In the French territory of the Basque region, Bayonne is where Deschamps was born. Deschamps started his football career while still in school with the amateur team Aviron Bayonnais after a brief time playing rugby with the Biarritz Olympique club.

He played defensive midfield for a variety of teams in France, Italy, England, and Spain, including Marseille, Juventus, Chelsea, and Valencia, as well as Nantes and Bordeaux.

Nantes scouts recognized his talent and made him a contract offer in April 1983. On September 27, 1985, Deschamps made his league debut. He relocated to Marseille in 1989. Deschamps returned to Marseille the following year, 1990, after spending the previous season on loan with Bordeaux.

On April 29, 1989, against Yugoslavia, Michel Platini first called Deschamps up, kicking off his international career. The French national team was having trouble at the time; they had failed to get past the first round of the UEFA Euro 1992 as well as the World Cup qualifying rounds in 1990 and 1994.
