Bob Coglianese passed away on Friday in Boynton Beach, Florida, according to the New York Racing Association.

His photographs from Belmont Park, Saratoga Race Course, and Aqueduct Racetrack set the bar for racing photography for a generation. He was 88 at the time of his passing.

After a fall that necessitated surgery, Coglianese had been unwell for a number of months.
Coglianese served as the NYRA’s official track photographer for more than 50 years. He is best known for his iconic head-on shot of Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont Stakes, which Sports Illustrated dubbed the greatest racing image of the 20th century. Other notable horses that he captured include Kelso, Dr. Fager, Affirmed, Cigar, and Secretariat.
