Gabrielle Beaumont passed away quietly on October 8 at her home in Spain, according to her brother Christopher Toyne, who confirmed the news to Deadline.

Gabrielle Beaumont may have directed more primetime television hours than any other woman in history.

On numerous 1980s and 1990s television hits, Beaumont was the first female director. Her list of credits also includes appearances on Touched by an Angel, three distinct editions of Star Trek, The Waltons, Miami Vice, Cagney & Lacy, M*A*S*H, L.A. Law, Baywatch, Archie Bunker’s Place, Remington Steele, and The Dukes of Hazard.

Her big break occurred when she was able to meet Aaron Spelling, who was under pressure to employ women and other underrepresented groups in the industry.

Beaumont’s brother, actor-producer Christopher Toyne, claims that Spelling neglected to see any of the videos she had brought. Beaumont was challenged, “Can you goddamn direct?” Yes, Goddamn it, she exclaimed. That evening, she departed to take over production of an episode of Robert Urich’s smash hit Vega$.

On Spelling’s shows, such as Knots Landing, Hart to Hart, The Colbys, Hotel, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills, 91210, 7th Heaven, and, of course, Dynasty, for which the director successfully fought for her friend Joan Collins to be cast, Beaumont established herself as a regular behind the camera.
