Sison was born on February 8, 1939, in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, to a well-known landowner family with ancestry from Spanish-Mexican-Malay mestizos and from Fujian, China.

The family also had connections to other illustrious clans, including the Crisólogos, Geraldinos, Vergara, Azcuetas, Sollers, Serranos, and Singsons.

At the end of the 19th century, Don Leandro Serrano, his great-grandfather, was the largest landowner in northern Luzon.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the party’s spokesman, Marco Valbuena, Sison passed away peacefully late on Friday after spending two weeks confined in a hospital in Utrecht, the Netherlands But there was no mention of the reason for death.

Sison passed away 10 days before the Dec. 26 celebration of the 54th anniversary of the party he established in 1968.

A few months later, in March 1969, the New People’s Army, which consisted of just approximately 60 Maoist warriors armed with 26 single-shot rifles and pistols and nine automatic rifles, was formed.

However, the movement rapidly evolved and spread throughout underdeveloped countries.
