Edward Christopher Sheeran was born on February 17, 1991, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. His childhood home was on Birchcliffe Road in nearby Hebden Bridge. His father was a curator at Cartwright Hall in Bradford, while his mother worked at Manchester City Art Gallery.

He moved with his family from Hebden Bridge to Framlingham in Suffolk in December 1995, where he attended the independent Brandeston Hall preparatory school (now Framlingham College Prep School) and subsequently Thomas Mills High School, also in Framlingham. Matthew, his older brother, is a composer.

Sheeran’s parents, John and Imogen, are from London. His paternal grandparents are Irish, and Sheeran’s father comes from a “very large” Catholic family. John is an art curator and lecturer, and Imogen is a former culture PR turned jewelry designer. From 1990 to 2010, his parents owned and operated Sheeran Lock, an independent art consultant.

Sheeran began recording music in 2004, and at the age of thirteen, he released his first collection of work, Spinning Man, on his own. [A] He’s known fellow English singer Passenger since he was 15 when the two shared a show in Cambridge. In 2008, he relocated to London and began performing in tiny venues. He tried out for the ITV show Britannia High in 2008. In April 2008, he opened for Nizlopi in Norwich after working as one of their guitar technicians. Sheeran began studying music as an undergraduate at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford, Surrey in the autumn of 2009 but left without permission the following year to support hip-hop musician Just Jack. He released another EP, You Need Me, in 2009, and also collaborated with Essex vocalist Leddra Chapman on many songs, including CeeLo Green’s “Fuck You.”

Sheeran began singing in a local church choir when he was four years old, learned to play the guitar when he was eleven, and began writing songs while attending Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham. When he was younger, he also played the cello. He was hailed as a “natural performer” in a 2004 school report, and his classmates voted him “most likely to be famous.” As a teenager, he was accepted into the National Youth Theatre in London.
