Joseph Chrest is an American actor and academic who was born on September 15, 1965.
In addition to Ted Wheeler in Stranger Things, he has appeared in a number of movies and television shows, including 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Oldboy, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, The Perfect Date, and many others.
Chrest grew up and went to high school in St. Albans, West Virginia, where he was born and raised. At Louisiana State University’s College of Music & Dramatic Arts, Chrest also teaches as an adjunct at the School of Theatre. He joined the LSU Swine Palace in its early years, in 1992.

The Swine Palace, a historic livestock judging pavilion, was set to be demolished in 1992. It was the first building built on the current LSU campus and was designated as the future home of the Swine Palace theater company. The theater company founded in 1992 by Barry Kyle (former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre) in collaboration with the LSU Department of Theatre was named after the original name of the building in which it would be located.
