British-born Charlene “Michael” Hyatt is an American actress.

Prior to her involvement in cinema and television, she performed on stages all throughout the country, most notably in Ragtime on Broadway.

She played Brianna Barksdale on The Wire, Dr. Noelle Akopian on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Detective Sheila Muncie on Ray Donovan.

Hyatt has a lengthy resume of stage, movie, and television performances. Early in her career, Hyatt performed for five months in the Ragtime production on Broadway.

She played the role of Rita in Danai Gurira’s 2009 Los Angeles production of the play Eclipsed.

Hyatt played Brianna Barksdale in the first four seasons of the HBO drama The Wire. In the Spike TV series The Kill Point, she portrayed Connie Reubens, the head of the SWAT unit. She has appeared on two Aaron Sorkin-produced shows Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The West Wing.

Hyatt immigrated to the US when she was ten years old, together with her mother and two siblings. Hyatt obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Howard University and a Master of Fine Arts from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University before the family relocated from Maryland to Washington, D.C.

She participated in a theater practicum while attending college and worked at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. As a graduate student, she worked as Spike Lee’s assistant.
