Wendell Ramone Ellis Jr. was born in Sumter, South Carolina on December 27, 1981. His father was an Air Force officer, and his mother, Paula Bryant-Ellis, was a finance executive. He is the family’s only child.
He attended 12 schools over the course of 13 years before enrolling at Concordia University in Oregon, where he played basketball. Ellis worked as a public relations intern for the Portland Trail Blazers during their infamous “Jail Blazers” era. After completing his internship, Ellis shifted his focus to modeling and began working with Portland-based sportswear companies such as Nike, Adidas, and Columbia Sportswear.
Ellis relocated to Los Angeles in 2004 to pursue his acting career. He began his professional acting career in 2005 when he appeared briefly in single episodes of the television shows Invasion and Related. In 2011 and 2012, he appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, and How I Met Your Mother. His first major acting role was in BET’s The Game in 2013. Ellis joined the cast of HBO’s comedy series Insecure, which premiered in October 2016. He plays Lawrence Walker, who has a long-term relationship with the main character, Issa Dee, played by Issa Rae. Ellis was named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 49th NAACP Image Awards for his work on the show.
