Linda Purl, an American actress, and singer was born on September 2, 1955. She is best known for her roles as Ashley Pfister, Fonzie’s girlfriend, on Happy Days (she made her Happy Days debut as Gloria, Richie’s date, in season 2 episode 6), Sheila Munroe, Pam Beesly’s mother in The Office, and Charlene Matlock, Ben Matlock’s daughter, in the first season of the Matlock television series.

Purl was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on September 2, 1955, to Jewish parents Marshelline “Marshie” Purl and Raymond Charles Arthur Purl, who worked in the chemical industry. Her sister is Mara. The girls’ grandmother, Beatrice Saville, created the Actors’ Equity Association.

Purl’s family moved to Japan when she was five years old since her father was working for Nippon Unicar there. She was raised there and attended the Toho Geino Academy for acting training.

At the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo, Purl participated in a number of plays, landing the parts of Louis in The King and I, Bet in Oliver!, and Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She was also discovered by Toho, and she appeared in additional films.

In Washington, Connecticut, she graduated from Wykeham Rise School, a prestigious boarding school for girls with a focus on the performing and visual arts. She appeared in the soap opera The Secret Storm while still a high school student.
