Curtis Bannister was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but his family had to move about a lot because of his father’s job. They eventually settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he spent his formative years. He liked to hum and sing constantly as a child, especially songs from the church choir and the radio. Later, he joined the “Green Bay Boy Choral,” performing at choir competitions around the nation. Curtis received his degree from Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute.
Curtis Bannister made his New York operatic debut as Florestan in Fidelito with Heartbeat Opera and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He also performed Carlos in Undying Wallace and Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime.
The Fidelio production also made a stop on the West Coast, performing at venues like Davis, California’s Mondavi Center, Scottsdale Performing Arts Center, and The Broad Stage in California.
