Morgan Freeman is an American actor, director, and narrator who was born on June 1, 1937. He is well known for his recognizable deep voice and numerous roles in many different film genres. He has won numerous honors throughout his over five-decade career, including an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Freeman expressed an interest in starting a film production company while filming Outbreak. Lori McCreary, the producer of Bopha!, agreed to be his business partner. Freeman told her that he wanted to achieve representation on screen, explore difficult issues, and reveal hidden truths, so they named their company Revelations Entertainment.

In 1997, Freeman narrated the Academy Award-winning documentary The Long Way Home, which was about the liberation of Jewish refugees after WWII and the establishment of Israel. He also appeared alongside Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, and Matthew McConaughey in Steven Spielberg’s historical epic Amistad. Based on the events of 1839 aboard the slave ship La Amistad, the film was mostly well-received and received four Academy Award nominations. However, Salon magazine’s critic thought the film lacked inspiration and that Freeman’s role was “utterly cryptic.” In the same year, he was chosen to play psychologist Alex Cross in the thriller Kiss the Girls, which was adapted from the same-titled James Patterson book from 1995. Despite the drawn-out plot, Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle thought Freeman and co-star Ashley Judd gave strong performances.
