This perennially popular American actor has developed into one of the most admired figures in contemporary US cinema, with an authoritative voice and composed demeanor. A teacher named Mayme Edna (Revere) and a barber named Morgan Porterfield Freeman welcomed Morgan into the world on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to serving as a mechanic for the US Air Force from 1955 to 1959, the young Freeman attended Los Angeles City College. His first experience with the dramatic arts was on stage, where he performed in an all-African American production of the vivacious musical Hello, Dolly!

For Freeman, 2005 was a crucial year. In order to appear in the drama Million Dollar Baby, he first teamed up with his friend Clint Eastwood (2004). The on-screen performance by Freeman as former prizefighter Eddie “Scrap Iron” Dupris, who works in a dilapidated boxing gym with grizzled trainer Frankie Dunn, is simply world-class. The two collaborate to develop the skills of never-say-die female boxer Hilary Swank. Freeman received his fourth Oscar nomination, and his performance ultimately won him the Best Supporting Actor award from the Academy. He also provided the narration for Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005) and starred as Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins (2005) as Bruce Wayne/valuable Batman’s ally. In the two sequels to the groundbreaking, genre-defining trilogy, Freeman would reprise his role.
