Diego Alonso, a former striker best remembered for his top-scoring effort in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga second division title during the 2001–02 season, is the coach of the Uruguayan national football team.
Along with Valencia and Malaga in Spain, Alonso has played for teams in China, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, and Malaga. He was qualified to play for Uruguay’s national team seven times.
In 2011, Alonso began overseeing teams in South America and Inter Miami in the United States. He was appointed the team’s head coach on December 14, 2021, Uruguayan national football team. Alonso took over for Oscar Tabarez, a seasoned coach who had lost his previous four matches after managing Uruguay for 15 years. Losses have put Uruguay’s hopes of making it in jeopardy.
