Tyrann Devine Mathieu, a safety with the National Football League’s New Orleans Saints, was born on May 13, 1992. (NFL). He represented Louisiana State University in college football (LSU). He gained a reputation in college for forcing turnovers, breaking the Southeastern Conference (SEC) record with 11 forced fumbles in a career, and earned the moniker “the Honey Badger” after the aforementioned mammal. He was named a unanimous All-American during his sophomore year, earned the Chuck Bednarik Award for finest defensive player in college football, and advanced to the Heisman Trophy finals. After that season, Mathieu was kicked out of the LSU football program for breaking team rules.
Mathieu, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, attended St. Augustine High School and played high school football for the St. Augustine Purple Knights. As a senior, he had 32 tackles, five interceptions, one sack, and one fumble recovery.
