Higgins competed in football, basketball, and track as a three-sport athlete at Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas. He was a wide receiver for the football team from Mesquite. He had 69 receptions for 1,136 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. According to Rivals.com, Higgins was a two-star recruit. He averaged 17 points per game as a starter for the Mesquite basketball team.
He was also a standout in track and field at Mesquite. At the 2013 District Meet, he finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in 22.76 seconds and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters. At the 2012 Rockin R Relays, he ran a personal-best time of 53.48 seconds in the 400-meter dash, finishing fifth.
Higgins was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 172nd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He agreed to a four-year deal on May 13 for about $2.52 million, which included a signing bonus of about $184,000 as well. In his first season, he caught six passes for 77 yards.
