Ekwonu who is of Nigerian descent attended and graduated from Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. He managed to impress a lot of college scouts with his skills as an offensive tackle thereby receiving a lot of scholarship offers to play college football for their respective teams.
He finally settled on North Carolina State as his preferred college after he graduated from high school.
During his college days, The Associated Press named Ekwonu second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference at guard and tackle.
He was moved back to left tackle and led the Wolfpack with 50 pancake blocks and 22 knockdowns. He was named to the FWAA Freshman All-America team during his freshman season.
