Leslie Samuel Phillips CBE, an English actor, voice actor, and author passed away on November 7, 2022. He became famous in the 1950s by portraying sleek, upper-class comedy parts while employing his catchphrases “Ding Dong” and “He-llo.” He appeared in the Carry On and Doctor in the House film series in addition to the classic BBC radio comedy The Navy Lark.

Later in his career, Phillips acted in dramatic roles, including one opposite Peter O’Toole in Venus for which he received a BAFTA nomination (2006). He voiced the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films.

The third child of Frederick Samuel Phillips and Cecelia Margaret (née Newlove), who both worked at Edmonton-based stove maker Glover and Main, Leslie Samuel Phillips was born on April 20, 1924, in Tottenham, London, England. “Beyond the auditory reach of the Bow Bells but inside the broad footprint of cockneydom,” according to Phillips, is how he defined his street.

Phillips attended Larkswood Primary School in Chingford, Essex, where the family had relocated in 1931. As a result, Phillips has identified as both an Essex boy and a cockney. His father passed away in 1935 at the age of 44 after developing a weak heart and oedema as a result of the “filthy, sulphurous” air of the plant.
