An English actor, voice artist, and author, Leslie Samuel Phillips has passed away.
He rose to fame in the 1950s by using his catchphrases “Ding Dong” and “He-llo” to play slick, upper-class comedic roles in addition to the enduring BBC radio comedy series.
The Navy Lark, he also made appearances in the Carry On and Doctor in the House film series.
Later in his career, Phillips took on dramatic roles, including one in Venus with Peter O’Toole for which he was nominated for a BAFTA (2006).
In the Harry Potter movies, he provided the Sorting Hat’s voice.
He appeared as part of the halftime show during Tottenham Hotspur F.C.’s home game against Swansea City A.F.C. on April 1, 2012. He was a fan of the team.
After a protracted illness, Phillips passed away on November 7, 2022, at the age of 98.

On May 30, 1948, Phillips wed Penelope Bartley, a famous actress. The couple had four kids together.
In 1962, Phillips started dating Caroline Mortimer, an actress who was Phillips’ understudy in a stage production and the stepdaughter of John Mortimer and author Penelope Mortimer.
At that point, Phillips and Bartley fell out of love and got divorced in 1965.
Following the breakup of his relationship with Mortimer, Phillips began dating Australian actress Vicki Luke, with whom he shared a home for roughly three years
In 1977, he moved in with actress Angela Scoular, who was pregnant by another actor at the time. He raised her son as if he were his own.
He learned of Bartley’s death in a fire while on tour in Australia in 1981. Phillips chose to continue working on the play and did not attend her mother’s funeral. His family had never forgiven him for this decision, he later admitted.
After his first wife died in 1981, he married Scoular in 1982. They were together until her death on April 11, 2011. Scoular had bowel cancer as well as bipolar disorder. Phillips was too ill to attend Scoular’s inquest three months later.
Phillips married Zara Carr (born 1963), his third wife, on December 20, 2013, when he was 89 years old.
