Mullen was a highly recruited cornerback out of high school, and ESPN ranked him as the second-best in his class. He attended Clemson University and played football there.

According to ESPN, Mullen was a top student. LSU, Florida State, and Alabama are just a few of the schools that gave Mullen a scholarship offer. On national signing day, Mullen selected Clemson as his school. Mullen played only occasionally in his first year at Clemson. In addition to one pass breakup, he recorded 15 tackles. Mullen saw a significant increase in playing time during his sophomore year, starting 12 of the 13 games he played in while compiling 42 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups.

Mullen was chosen as an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection following the season. Mullen declared for the 2019 NFL Draft after the 2018 season, saying he would forgo his senior year.

Against the Denver Broncos in week 1, Mullen played in his first NFL game. Mullen contributed one tackle to the 24-16 victory. Mullen recorded his first interception off Ryan Finley in week 11’s 17-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Mullen was taken off the field after suffering a head injury in week 16’s game versus the Los Angeles Chargers.
